being part of the local community
The Last Resort started its operations in the area by building a bridge. The bridge was necessary to be able to run the bungy and to get access to the resort grounds, set on top of a deep gorge. But the bridge also helped develop the area around the resort by giving the villagers easy access to the main road. We then hired most of the resort staff locally and gave necessary training to them. The staff members have health and accident insurance, a provident fund saving account and share in the profit.
A fix amount from every bungy, swing and canyoning trip is spent on developing and maintaining the local infrastructure and supporting several projects on health, education, women empowerment and micro finance. With help of the resort and our international sponsors we built and renovated schools in the area, supported the construction of a new sub-health post and are also giving evening classes to teach local women how to read and write. We run several micro-finance projects with village organisations, which have already helped the villagers to set up an organic farm and a briquette making industry. At the moment we are starting a volunteer program with international volunteers, who will teach English and athletics to the local schoolchildren. We are also developing a home stay hike around the resort. In our fair trade shop we sell products from several projects in Nepal.
The Last Resort tries to use as little plastic as possible, and we ask our customers to refill their water bottles instead of buying packaged mineral water every time. The resort is also organizing environmental awareness programs with the local youth club for the surrounding villages.

Tourism can help to develop the economy of Nepal. But if not carefully managed, tourism can also have a damaging impact on the country’s natural and cultural heritage.
Responsible tourism businesses try to minimize the impact of tourism on the environment and maximize employment and income-generating opportunities for local communities. The whole of Nepal can benefit from sustainable tourism, including those living in remote, rural areas that have very few other development opportunities.
Responsible Travel Nepal companies offer everything from trekking to rafting, bird watching tours to biking expeditions, cultural heritage excursions to jungle safaris and luxury hotel accommodation to village home-stays.
Please consider using an RTN-approved company to make sure your holiday helps protect the environment and creates jobs and income for local communities.
