Hiking itinerary Chhagam Hike
Day 2: We will trek to Khanigaun, a 6-hour uphill walk through the stunning terraced fields and Tamang villages, so evocative of the essence of Nepal. Khanigaun (2200m) is a big Newari village, offering excellent views of surrounding snow peaks.
According to local legend 245 years ago, while Nepal’s first king Prithivi Narayan Shah was uniting Nepal, a pregnant lady fearing war escaped to this place from Patan. The lady gave birth to two sons, one of whom was killed by a tiger, while her second son settled in Khanigaun. Now there are about 350 people settled there. Tonight we will camp near the Dalle Pokhari School (Dalle Lake School).
Day 3: We trek to Chhagam (2800m). From Khanigaun it is approximately a 2½-hour walk uphill to Golu Bhanjyang. We then descend gradually to a small river, after which the trail goes uphill to Chhagam’s big monastery. This is an Ani Gompa, a nunnery, in which many Ani (nuns) who have left Tibet since the1950s have settled. After our 7-8 hour walk, we are welcomed at this fascinating Gompa and can enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan range. We will camp at Chhagam.
Day 4: We trek to the Last Resort. Today’s walk is approximately 6-7 hours and is a down hill walk through many delightful villages and with brilliant views! On the way we pass through Listikot village, a fascinating and relatively large mountain village on the ancient trade route to Tibet. In the old days, the first Rana Prime Minister built a palace here because of its historical important. We have plenty to see on our way down to The Last Resort, before enjoying our well-earned shower and cold drinks.
Chhagam Hike (3 nights, 4 days)
In this four-day trek the views and the cultural diversity will keep you excited and wondering what is around the next corner. This is a chance to learn about the incredible variety of cultures in Nepal and have stunning Himalayan views normally associated with three-week treks.
Day 1: From Kathmandu we drive to Dande (5 hrs) and then have 2 hours of gradual walking to the small village of Chanaute. Chanaute is notable for its fascinating mix of cultures and we will get to know Bhramin, Chettri, Newar and Tamang cultures during our stay. Weather permitting we shall have beautiful views up the valley to Jugal Himal.
